Award-winning composer Matthias Weber has scored everything from episodic television to multi-award winning films. He has created a unique voice of his own, interfusing processed and manipulated orchestral elements with sometimes gentle, sometimes fierce electronic textures and pulses combined with organic live performances. What sets him apart is his profound background as a classical performer / composer, especially in poignant European church music, paired with an active background in heavy hitting, groove oriented Rock, Jazz and experimental electronics. A film music critic once called him a “Nine Inch Nails Palestrina”. His philosophy of being “emotional without being sentimental” can be felt in each and every one of his pieces.

By accident, literally following a bad car accident, 28 year old Weber switched his performance career to composition and film scoring. Despite not growing up a “natural born film lover nor a film music lover”, he managed to carve out his niche and forge extremely successful collaborations with top filmmakers. Weber’s approach is to pick the spots for big, bold musical statements very carefully, otherwise creating restrained, minimalist sonorities that leave the audience room for their own emotional perceptions rather than telling them what to think every step of the way.

Matthias Weber grew up in a musical family in Freiburg, Germany. He started getting serious about music at the young age of 5 and over the next years gradually mastered a variety of instruments, from alto recorder to piano, guitar, bass, synthesizer, percussion and to church organ, to name just a few. As a multi-instrumentalist he is known to be a compelling improviser regardless of musical genre.

After his classical training in Germany he studied composition and film scoring at the world renowned Berklee College of Music on a Fulbright Scholarship. He graduated “Summa Cum Laude” and moved to Los Angeles where he continued graduate studies in Music at the USC Thornton School of Music. His Master’s Degree in Professional Media Composition he got from the University of Chichester, UK .

For the past two decades Matthias Weber has worked on a variety of projects for both Hollywood and European productions. Initially Weber worked on episodic television from “Baywatch” to “The Sopranos” to “The Shield” and the pilot for “The Good Wife”. Some of his film credits as a programmer / arranger include work on “Pearl Harbor” (with Hans Zimmer), “League of Extraordinary Gentleman” (with Trevor Jones), and “Expedition Bismarck” (with James Cameron) for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Editing.

In 2005, Matthias Weber scored the medieval epic “Shadow Of The Sword” which led to a variety of award winning European features and TV movies. With Austrian director Andreas Prochaska he worked on projects such as the critically acclaimed TV Drama “Anatomy of Evil” and “A Day for a Miracle” which won an International Emmy for Best TV Movie/Mini Series.

Most recently Matthias Weber received two of the most prestigious European awards, a German Academy Award (“Lola”) and an Austrian Academy Award – both for Best Score for the “The Dark Valley”. This vengeance/action thriller set in 1875 Alpine Austria was another collaboration with star director Andreas Prochaska.

Weber also scored the 2018 Sky Television/Hulu series “Das Boot”, the sequel to the Academy Award-nominated 1981 film. “Das Boot” was nominated for 9 German Television Academy Awards including Best Music for Weber’s score.

Matthias is also an in demand lecturer on film scoring at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and UCLA Extension and he regularly conducts workshops on the topic in the US, Germany, Austria, Holland and in Ecuador. Weber shares his time between Los Angeles and Europe.

Der deutsche Komponist Matthias Weber ist durch sein vielfältiges Talent und seine musikalisch authentische Sprache ein in Europa und in Hollywood gefragter Künstler. Er entwickelte eine sehr eigene musikalische Sprache, die mehr oder weniger verfremdete und manipulierte Orchesterelemente mit mal sanften, mal vehement massiven elektronischen Texturen und Pulsen verbindet. Was ihn herausragen läßt, ist die seltene Kombination eines tiefgehenden klassischen Fundaments als konzertierender Musiker und Komponist, vorwiegend in der europäischen Kirchenmusik, mit einem heftigen Background als Rocker, Jazzer und experimenteller Elektroniker. Ein Kritiker nannte ihn einmal den “Nine Inch Nails Palaestrina”. Seinen Leitsatz “tiefe Emotionalität – ohne Sentimentalität” spürt man in jeder seiner Musiken.

Der Emmy Preisträger wurde 2014 für seine Filmmusik von „Das finstere Tal“ (Österreichs Kandidat für den Auslands-Oscar 2014) mit dem Deutschen Filmpreis und 2015 mit dem Österreichischen Filmpreis ausgezeichnet . Matthias Weber wuchs in Freiburg im Umfeld einer hoch musikalischen Familie auf und begann bereits im jungen Alter von fünf Jahren ernsthaft zu musizieren. Er lernte zuerst Alflöte und fügte binnen weniger Jahre eine Vielzahl von Instrumenten seinem Repertoire zu. Sein Talent entfaltete sich am Klavier, der Gitarre, am Bass, Synthesizer, Perkussion und als Konzertorganist.

Matthias Weber hat sich als fesselnder Improvisator einen Namen gemacht, unabhängig vom musikalischen Genre. Nach seinem klassischen Studium in Deutschland, studierte er Filmmusik am Berklee College of Music, wo er ein Fulbright Stipendium erhielt. Nach Abschluss des Studiums zog er nach Los Angeles, wo er an der University of Southern California (Thornton School of Music) ein Aufbaustudium begann. Später vervollständigte er seine Studien mit einem Master Abschluß in “Komposition für Medien” an der University of Chichester in England.

Seit Jahren arbeitet Matthias Weber an zahlreichen Projekten in Hollywood und Europa. Zunächst begann sein künstlerisches Schaffen im Fernsehen, wo er an TV-Serien wie „Baywatch“, „The Sopranos“, „The Shield“ und „The Good Wife“ mitwirkte. So steuerte er zu zahlreichen, mehrfach preisgekrönten Kino- und Fernsehfilmen die Musik bei, u.a. Andreas Prochaska’s „In 3 Tagen bist du tot “ und der Erfolgsreihe „Spuren des Bösen“, Nikolaus Leytner’s „Die Auslöschung“ und Prochaska’s „Das Wunder von Kärnten“, das 2013 in NewYork mit einem Internationalen Emmy ausgezeichnet wurde.

Aktuelle Projekte sind “Brüder” mit Regisseur Züli Aladag, “Die Stille Danach” mit Nikolaus Leytner, “Halal Daddy” mit Regisseur Conor McDermottroe und Produzent Hermann Florin und die historische, dreiteilige Mini-Serie “Maximilian” mit Andreas Prochaska, eine aufwändige österreichisch-deutsch-französische Koproduktion.

Weber ist auch ein gefragter Dozent für Filmkomposition in USA, Ecuador, Holland, Deutschland und Österreich.
